Interstate Projects is pleased to present First Communion of Anemic Young Girls in the Snow and other works, an exhibition of selections from RICHARD (www.rdotmdot.wordpress.com). The title of this exhibition pays homage to Aphonse Allais' 1883 satyrical drawing Première Communion de Jeunes Filles Chlorotiques par un Temps de Neige, one of the first ready-made artworks ever produced.

RICHARD entries consist of as is or slightly altered images, objects, videos, sounds, software, files, texts etc., designated as readymade artwork by an expanding cast of contributors. Upon being included in RICHARD’s online catalog, entries are stripped of all indentifiers and provenance info, assigned a code number and a title/description written by the author to address the object and its new potential as readymade artwork. Entries are generally made available for use and reproduction with as few restrictions as possible.

RICHARD is a constantly updated, online catalog of readymade images, objects and ideas. RICHARD’s co-authored catalog of anonymous entries experiments with the idea that thinking of readymades as capital “A” art might be less interesting than observing how their production and dissemination works (or could work) in everyday life. In this sense, First Communion of Anemic Young Girls In The Snow and other works unfolds an alternative scenario for the creation and presentation of visual art, using Interstate Projects as an autonomous zone where RICHARD’s catalog entries are at once staged visual experience and illustration. It is an explicit encouragement to adopt the same attention and open-mindedness that made such optimistically simple creative acts possible in the practice of our daily life.
